Course schedule

Strategic Management: Aligning Mission, Vision and Resources

This course will explore how to engage in strategic planning and management of a nonprofit organization with innovation and agility, so that an organization's mission, vision, values, programs and resources may be fully aligned. Students will learn the skills needed to develop these key aspects of a strategic plan and manage its successful implementation.

This intensive five-week course explores the following topics:

• Introduction to Strategic Management: Vision, Mission and Values
• Planning to Plan: Designing a Planning Process
• Managing and Engaging in the Planning Process
• The Planning Retreat: Making Strategic Decisions
• Building Out the Plan and Managing its Implementation

Learning Objectives
Upon completion of readings and assigned learning activities, students will be able to:

• Articulate the importance of strategic management for nonprofits and differentiate it from strategic planning;
• Identify essential components of a strategic planning process;
• Conduct a SWOT analysis for a nonprofit organization and recognize other tools available for planning;
• Understand the purpose and function of a strategic planning retreat in the context of the larger strategic planning process; and
• Develop a work plan to implement an organization's new strategic directions.

Special features of this course:

• A weekly Resource Center, which provides carefully tailored readings and other resources.
• “Studio” activities offer opportunities for new and experienced practitioners to cultivate practical skills.
• Original case studies and problem-based learning activities.
• In-depth weekly discussions on the real-life challenges and opportunities of strategic management.
• A small class size of 25 participants.

This is an instructor-led course delivered entirely online. It is highly interactive and requires active participation on discussions boards and completion of assigned projects. There are no real-time class meetings. Students work at times that are convenient for them within the weekly schedule of activities. We estimate spending an average of 8 – 10 hours per week on each Certificate in Nonprofit Management course. For this reason, we highly recommend students participate in no more than two CNM courses at a time.

NOTE: This is a tech-enhanced course that requires access to Blackboard, a course management system used by UIC. In order to complete registration, you must submit proof of identity to secure your unique NetID (username). More information on this process can be found on the Know More about Registering and Paying section of our Web site.
