Engaging the New Volunteer Workforce: Attracting and Retaining Volunteers to Strengthen Your Organization and Effect Social Change
|Sixty-four million people volunteered at least once during 2012 (Source: Bureau of Labor Statistics) and the numbers are increasing. In this course, you will learn the growing importance of volunteerism today, how to attract and retain volunteers based on an understanding of their needs and interests and how to develop the organizational infrastructure necessary to sustain a volunteer program. Readings and discussion will also emphasize the global dimension of volunteering today.
This intensive five-week course explores the following topics:
• The new volunteer workforce: Changing roles, changing demographics.
• Common barriers to effective volunteer management.
• Best practices: Developing a strategic volunteer plan.
• Translating for-profit skills to nonprofit agencies.
• Wrap up: Attracting, retaining, evaluating and recognizing volunteers in your organization.

• A small class size of 25 participants.
This is an instructor-led course delivered entirely online. It is highly interactive and requires active participation on discussions boards and completion of assigned projects. There are no real-time class meetings. Students work at times that are convenient for them within the weekly schedule of activities. We estimate spending an average of 8 – 10 hours per week on each Certificate in Nonprofit Management course. For this reason, we highly recommend students participate in no more than two CNM courses at a time.
