Engaging the New Volunteer Workforce: Attracting and Retaining Volunteers to Strengthen Your Organization and Effect Social Change

Sixty-four million people volunteered at least once during 2012 (Source: Bureau of Labor Statistics) and the numbers are increasing. In this course, you will learn the growing importance of volunteerism today, how to attract and retain volunteers based on an understanding of their needs and interests and how to develop the organizational infrastructure necessary to sustain a volunteer program. Readings and discussion will also emphasize the global dimension of volunteering today.

This intensive five-week course explores the following topics:

• Meet the New Volunteer Workforce: Changing Roles, Changing Demographics.
• Preparing Your Organization for the New Volunteer Workforce.
• Connecting and Communicating with Volunteers.
• Retaining and Recognizing Your Volunteers.
• New Trends in Volunteering.

Learning Objectives
Upon completion of readings and assigned learning activities, students will be able to:

• Describe the characteristics and composition of the new volunteer workforce and the rationale for embracing new models of volunteer engagement;
• Identify the steps involved in preparing for a volunteer initiative; and
• Articulate basic principles and best practices for recruiting, equipping,recognizing and retaining volunteers.
• Explain recent developments such as micro-volunteering.

Required Text
All readings and learning resources will be provided on the course web site. No texts are required for purchase at this time.

• Weekly readings and resources to inform your understanding of volunteer management.
• “Studio” activities offer opportunities for new and experienced practitioners to cultivate practical skills.
• Original case studies and problem-based learning activities.
• In-depth weekly discussions on the real-life challenges and opportunities of volunteer management.
• A small class size generally limited to 25 participants.

This is an instructor-led course delivered entirely online. It is highly interactive and requires active participation on discussions boards and completion of assigned projects. There are no real-time class meetings. Students work at times that are convenient for them within the weekly schedule of activities.

We estimate spending an average of 8 – 10 hours per week on each Certificate in Nonprofit Management course. For this reason, we highly recommend students participate in no more than two CNM courses at a time.

NOTE: This is a tech-enhanced course that requires access to Blackboard, a course management system used by UIC.
