Affiliated Units
External Education is one of four existing campus units that comprise the School of Continuing Studies (SCS). Along with External Education, the Office of Continuing Education, the Office of Summer Session, and the Tutorium in Intensive English form the core of the SCS. The SCS is housed in the Office of Academic Affairs, and reports to the Vice Provost for Graduate and Continuing Studies.
In addition to the courses and programs offered through External Education, the following UIC offices and colleges offer non-credit and continuing education programs.
Office of Continuing Education
Committed to access and flexibility, the Office of Continuing Education in the School of Continuing Studies brings the excellence of UIC's world-class faculty and diverse academic programs to teachers and other working professionals. Tutorium in Intensive English
Housed in the School of Continuing Studies, the Tutorium offers year-round, non-credit intensive ESL instruction for academic preparation and professional development. TIE’s English for International Professionals Series (EIPS) is designed for professionals and academics who have finished their ESL studies and wish to improve specific English skills. Other offerings include the TOEFL Preparation Course for students who already have very good English and want to prepare for the TOEFL by practicing and learning key test-taking strategies while gaining experience and confidence. College of Business Administration Professional Development Program
The UIC College of Business Administration Professional Development Program keeps professionals and entrepreneurs equipped with the latest knowledge and skills in critical business areas. The programs range from multi-course classroom certificate programs to online courses to customized corporate training, on or off premise. Phone: (312) 355-0423.
College of Dentistry - Continuing Education
In addition to the graduate-level credit programs offered through UIC's Office of Continuing Education, the College of Dentistry offers non-credit programs for licensed, practicing dentists. Course listings may be found on the College of Dentistry's continuing education Web site. Highlights include courses such as Bioterrorism and Dentistry or Nitrous Oxide Monitoring and Administration. College of Medicine - Continuing Medical Education
UIC College of Medicine is one of four University of Illinois sites that make up the nation’s largest medical school. CME’s regularly scheduled conferences (RSC) cover a broad range of topics in a particular discipline, whereas CME courses are more focused and of shorter duration (2 hours to several days). CME also offers interactive online activities. CME’s audience is made up of physicians who want to enhance their performance and behavior and acquire new knowledge, skills and attitudes appropriate to the latest practice theories. College of Nursing - IHI's Continuing Studies
The UIC College of Nursing and its Institute for Healthcare Innovation (IHI) partner with organizations, institutions and educators to provide continuing education for healthcare professionals. UIC's College of Nursing is an approved provider of continuing nursing education by the Illinois Nurses Association, accredited through the American Nurses Credentialing Centers Commission on Accreditation.

College of Pharmacy - Continuing Education and Meeting Services
The College of Pharmacy's Continuing Education and Meeting Services program offers up-to-date information to pharmacists using state-of-the-art technology, including online courses and Web conferencing. Other offerings consist of live seminars at hotels, resorts, restaurants, hospitals and medical centers. The College of Pharmacy’s outreach goal is to provide convenient, worthwhile programming that meets the needs of today’s pharmacists. Phone: (312) 996-7190.
School of Public Health - Continuing Education
Through continuing education, the College of Public Health aspires to enhance the knowledge and skills of public health practitioners, allied professionals and others in order to better protect and promote the health of the public they serve. There are four divisions:
- First, the Great Lakes Centers for Occupational and Environmental Safety and Health provides continuing education to occupational and environmental health and safety professionals.
- Second, the Public Health Informatics Program provides certification for those professionals who already have a public health degree or public health experience and are involved in the informatics mission of their agencies and wish to upgrade their informatics skills. The Public Health Informations Program also serves individuals who wish to pursue a shorter course of study in public health informatics with an option to apply for the full MPH informatics degree program at a later date.
- Third, the Health Preparedness Center exists to enhance the readiness of the public health workforce in responding to routine and urgent public health threats, including bioterrorism events.
- Finally, the Maternal & Child Health Bureau provides continuing education and technical assistance to the MCH workforce with a focus on improving the health of women, children and families. Phone: (312) 996-6620.
